Mexico Day 6

Xcajum cenote

On Thursday Matt wasn't feeling well so he stayed back at the hotel but Heather, Justice and Hanna joined Zach, the girls and I on a full day outing.  We learned so much about the Mayan culture from our tour guide on our bus!  Our first stop was the Xcajum cenote.  Man we thought Playa Del Carmen was hot...wow!!!  We could have swam at the cenote but the kids said they didn't want to have to change in and out of their swim suits, so we decided not to swim but just walk around.  We also had lunch here, the food was great and it was so beautiful there!

The Bus Ride
It was a very long day with lots of hours on the bus, but thankfully we had comfy seats and great AC!  The girls wanted to make sure we got a picture of the tour busses we got to ride to our adventures on, they thought they were pretty cool busses!  Zach and I took some pictures of a few of the homes and buildings along the roads.  We are so fortunate to live where we live and have the homes we have!

Chichen Itza

Our next stop was Chichen Itza.  The heat was even crazier here, thank heavens for cooling towels!  But wow it was so amazing to see!  I'm so glad we went to Xcaret first and got to see the play and see how they played the games before we went and saw the ruins in person!  First we went and checked out "The Great Ball Court".  It was kind of cool to try to imagine them playing on the field. They believed in live human sacrifice though and it would be the team captain of the winning team!  It was considered an honor because he would get to meet his God.

Some of the facts that were fascinating to me about El Castillo (The Temple) were that they discovered that it had another temple (pyramid inside) and they also discovered what they believe to be a cenote below the base of it.  Also in certain places outside of the temple if you stood and clapped the echo sounded like a quetzal bird.

Where we stood and clapped to hear the bird chirp
They have to leave a certain percentage of the temple unrestored
in order to leave the ruins under the protection and maintenance of the Historical restoration society
